Engine Rebuild Considerations & Associated Costs The KZ engines have reached an age where the rubber components of the cam chain idler system are not reliable. Those components are costly but most often are an absolute must have no matter what level of performance you're seeking. Reliability comes into play in ALL engine packages. Cut corners....get bad results. It's just that simple. With performance packages, the real HP making takes place in the top end of the motor. The level of performance you're after will determine how much the bottom end of the motor may need to be beefed up to handle the HP generated from the top end performance work. If you require performance transmission work, crankshaft modifications, clutch basket modifications, etc. Then count on expenses in the $1500 range at minimum. A stock or drop in cam performance engine, especially with a KZ1000 crankshaft, often won't require the crankshaft to be welded, undercut transmission, etc. However, consider these bikes are over 30 years old. The crank and transmission should be inspected at the very least. This requires splitting the engine cases. When trying do decide on an engine rebuild, you have to be realistic. What you want in terms of HP vs what your budget will allow vs the reliability of the engine must be balanced out. No matter what type of engine package you're after, we can help you sort out the situation and get you pointed in the right direction for your project. Unfortunately, anything other than giving a more than fair labor price on the work we perform, we have no control over the cost of parts. If you're looking for engine package components list for your 900 / 1000 Street Motor, we've created a page just for that purpose. KZ Street Engine Components. |
